GTA Online has been running strong since 2013, and somehow it's still one of the most played online games out there.
Whether you're grinding heists with friends or just roaming Los Santos solo, you're spending hours in Rockstar's online world.
And with so many wild claims floating around online about how much data it eats, one question keeps popping up.
So, how much internet data does GTA Online use?
On average, GTA Online uses around 50 MB of internet data per hour in a normal session, which is quite light for an open-world multiplayer game.
In a packed 30-player Free Mode lobby or a busy heist, that can climb closer to 100 MB per hour, since more players means more data being synced back and forth.

I've also cleared up why some players online claim GTA Online used several gigabytes in just a couple of hours, since that number is almost never the actual game!
So, without any further ado, let us dive right into it!
Internet Data Usage of GTA Online
This one needed some extra digging, because search results for GTA Online's data usage are genuinely all over the place.
I found a mix of measured reports, tech blog breakdowns, and old forum posts claiming numbers ranging from a few dozen MB an hour all the way up to several gigabytes.
Once I filtered out the extreme outliers, which were almost always old forum posts where the player was likely also downloading console system updates in the background, the credible sources agreed pretty closely.
Across those sources, a normal GTA Online session, solo or in a small group, came out to around 50 MB per hour.
In a full 30-player Free Mode lobby, or during heists and jobs with a lot of simultaneous action, that number climbs to closer to 100 MB per hour.
So, we can conclude that the internet data usage of GTA Online is around 50 MB per hour under typical playing conditions.
From this, it's pretty straightforward to figure out the weekly and monthly data consumption as well!
If you play GTA Online for one hour every day for a week, the total internet data used would be around 350 MB per week.
And if you play for one hour every day throughout an entire month, the total data consumed would come out to around 1.46 GB per month.
Now, you might also want to know how much data GTA Online uses based on how long you play each day.

Does GTA Online use a LOT of Internet data?
Compared to most online games, GTA Online is genuinely light on data, using around 50 to 100 MB per hour depending on lobby size.
So why do you see people online claiming it used 4 GB, or even 7 GB, in just a couple of hours?
In almost every case, that's not the game session itself, it's a background console or platform update downloading at the same time, which most console bandwidth trackers lump in with whatever game happens to be running.
The actual game itself is a much bigger download than a data drain, GTA V's full install runs anywhere from about 92 GB to 115 GB depending on edition and platform, and title updates can add several more GB on top.
So if you're worried about your data cap, the practical advice is simple: keep automatic updates off while you're not actively downloading them, and the actual hourly gameplay will barely register.
