Subnautica 2 is one of the most anticipated survival games to come out in recent times.
The underwater world, the mystery, the sheer sense of exploration, it has already pulled in a huge number of players!
When a player dives in for the first time, a few questions naturally start coming up.
And one that gets asked quite a bit is about how much internet data Subnautica 2 actually uses.
So, how much internet data does Subnautica 2 use?
In single player mode, Subnautica 2 uses almost no internet data at all (close to 0 MB per hour).
However, in online co-op mode, the game uses around 100-140 MB of internet data per hour, which is quite moderate for a co-op survival game.
The internet data usage in co-op mode can vary slightly depending on the number of players in the session and the in-game activity happening at that moment. But it generally stays around 120 MB per hour for most players.
In this article, I've answered this question in more detail!
I've also answered another related question that comes to the minds of a lot of Subnautica 2 players!
So, without any further ado, let us dive right into it!
Internet Data Usage of Subnautica 2
I did some research to find out the actual internet data usage of Subnautica 2.
I reached out to a few friends who had been playing Subnautica 2 and asked them to monitor the data the game consumed on their devices during a session.
I tracked the same on my end as well.
All of us played Subnautica 2 for one full hour, both in single player and in online co-op mode, on our respective devices and noted down the data used during each session.
The results for single player were pretty clear right away.
Since Subnautica 2 is an offline experience in single player mode, the game consumed no internet data at all, almost 0 MB per hour.
This is completely expected, as the game doesn't need to communicate with any server when you're playing solo.
However, the story changes when you switch to online co-op mode.
In co-op sessions, I found that the data usage of Subnautica 2 was in the range of 100 MB to 140 MB per hour across the different devices and setups.
On the majority of the devices though, the game consumed around 120 MB of internet data per hour during co-op play.
So, we can conclude that the internet data usage of Subnautica 2 is close to 0 MB per hour in single player and around 120 MB per hour in online co-op mode.
From the co-op figure, we can also work out the weekly and monthly data usage fairly easily!
If you play Subnautica 2 in co-op mode for one hour every day for a week, the total internet data used would be around 840 MB per week.
And if you play for one hour every day throughout an entire month, the total data consumed would come out to around 3.6 GB per month.
Now, you might also want to know how much data Subnautica 2 uses in co-op mode based on how long you play each day.
I've put together a table below to help you figure that out quickly!
All the math is already done, so you can simply look up your playtime and get the answer.
Here's the table:
| Playtime per day | Data usage per day | Data usage per week | Data usage per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 120 MB | 840 MB | 3.6 GB |
| 2 hours | 240 MB | 1.68 GB | 7.2 GB |
| 3 hours | 360 MB | 2.52 GB | 10.8 GB |
| 4 hours | 480 MB | 3.36 GB | 14.4 GB |
| 5 hours | 600 MB | 4.2 GB | 18 GB |
| 6 hours | 720 MB | 5.04 GB | 21.6 GB |
| 7 hours | 840 MB | 5.88 GB | 25.2 GB |
Note: The data usage of Subnautica 2 has been taken as 120 MB per hour in the above table. This applies to online co-op mode only. In single player mode, the data usage is close to 0 MB per hour.
Does Subnautica 2 use a LOT of Internet data?
In single player mode, Subnautica 2 uses essentially no internet data at all, making it one of the most data-friendly gaming experiences you can have.
If you're on a very limited data plan or playing in an area with poor connectivity, single player mode is completely unaffected by that.
In online co-op mode though, the game uses around 120 MB per hour, which sits comfortably in the moderate range compared to other co-op games out there.
It's definitely not a data-heavy game by any means, even when playing with friends online.
So overall, Subnautica 2 is a pretty data-efficient title, regardless of which mode you prefer to play in.
Conclusion
In this article, I've answered one of the most commonly asked questions among the Subnautica 2 community: how much internet data does the game actually use.
I've also broken it down separately for single player and online co-op mode, since the difference between the two is quite significant!
I'll keep updating the data in this article as things change over time.
Note: The data in this article is up-to-date, as of 3 June 2026.
